A 56 year old glass ceiling is broken when Dr. Neelu Rohmetra was named to head IIM in Himachal Pradesh. IIMs got their first woman director since the first IIM was established in Calcutta in November 1961. After 56 years of IIMs history, a woman becomes the executive head of IIM that now number 20. Before Rohmetra, Keya Sengupta had helmed IIM Shillong briefly but as acting director.
The government on Friday appointed 10 heads of IIMs which includes Dr. Neelu Rohmetra of Jammu University appointed as director of IIM Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. The IIMs that got new directors are in Bodhgaya (Bihar), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Trichy (Tamil Nadu), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rohtak (Haryana), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Bangalore (Karnataka). Of the 10 appointees, three are teaching at IIM Lucknow. The tenure of a new director will be for five years or until they turn 65 years of age.
