The Indian Institutes of Technology will offer, on average 500 seats to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) candidates from the 2019-20 academic year, reported Hindustan Times. The move follows the Centre’s introduction of 10% reservations in jobs and educational institutions to economically weaker sections in January 2019. According to the tech school officials, this year most of the 23 IITs will implement on average around 4% EWS seats in IITs for this academic year against 10% of the quota.
In January, the Centre had announced 10% EWS reservations in jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker section to provide social equality. The EWS quota will be awarded without disturbing the existing quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
